Why do Iceland have black beaches?

'The black beach has been formed by boiling hot lava, from the  volcano, floating across the beach, then cooling and becoming solid when hitting the cold water.'

This is how Iceland's black beaches are formed. Have a look at the pictures below of some of the black beaches in Iceland.

One of the black beaches is call 'Vik' and the waves there are so fierce nobody can swim in or even get too close to sea!

Can you now have a go at making your own seaside with a black beach? Can you paint some stones black? Use some compost? Collect some mud?

Use one of these to have a go at creating your own seaside complete with beach and sea. What else can you make for it?
