Each child has a home reading diary and a reading book matched to their reading ability. Reading regularly at home is one of the most effective ways to support your child's progress.

Please read with your child at least three times a week and help them practise any phonemes, tricky words and spellings.

As well as listening to your child read, talk about the book together by discussing new vocabulary, asking questions about what they have read and encouraging them to make predictions.

Your child will receive login details for Times Tables Rock Stars, where they can practise their multiplication and division facts in a fun and engaging way. Regular practice helps children develop the fluency and confidence needed to use times tables effectively across all areas of mathematics.

You can also support your child's maths learning by using Hit the Button, which helps children develop recall of number bonds, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.

For Year 4 pupils, practising times tables is especially important as children complete the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Further information for parents can be found on the government's Year 4 Times Tables Test information page.

Maths is all around us, so everyday activities such as telling the time, handling money, measuring when cooking, reading timetables and calculating totals while shopping can all help to build your child's confidence and fluency in mathematics.

Year 4 Times Table Test

PE takes place on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit on these days and that all clothing is clearly labelled.

PE kit should include:

• White or pale blue T-shirt (with or without the school logo)
• Plain black or navy sweatshirt, or school sweatshirt
• Plain black or navy shorts
• Plain black or navy jogging bottoms or leggings (no logos or large branding)
• Trainers or black plimsolls 

Year 4 children will begin swimming lessons on Friday 18th September. Further information, including a permission form, will be sent home before lessons begin.

Swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and helps children develop confidence and water safety skills.

Each term, your child will receive a homework booklet containing a range of activities linked to their learning, alongside reading, maths and spelling practice.

Please encourage your child to complete the activities, have them signed off and return the booklet to the class team every Monday. Homework is marked on Mondays, and children earn points for completed work that can be exchanged for rewards and prizes.

Children will also receive a weekly spelling list to practise at home. These spellings will reinforce learning from class and may include common exception words and year-group spelling patterns. A spelling quiz takes place each week, and children who achieve 10/10 are awarded house points for their team.

Please send your child to school each day with a clearly labelled water bottle containing water only.

Children in Key Stage 2 may bring a healthy snack from home to enjoy at break time. Suitable snacks include:

• Fruit
• Vegetables
• Cheese
• Other healthy options

Please do not send sweets, chocolate, crisps or fizzy drinks. Encouraging healthy choices helps children stay focused and ready to learn throughout the day.
