Art

Welcome to our page about the art curriculum.

The intention of our art and design curriculum is:

  • To engage and inspire pupils, feeding their natural curiosity and sparking their imagination.

  • To encourage an appreciation of art, artists, and the impact it can have on the people who observe it.

  • To teach a range of techniques and mediums then allow children the opportunity to practice and apply these to create their own pieces of art.

  • As part of our Be Unique moto, we encourage and support all our pupils to be individuals, producing creative work and exploring their own preferences.

  • To teach children the knowledge and vocabulary to allow them to observe and evaluate the materials and techniques used by famous artists, craft -makers and designers, as well as describing the overall effect their work creates.

  • To enable children to form their own opinions about pieces of art, understanding that art evokes an emotional response which is personal to the viewer.

  • We aim to introduce children to a wide range of art materials, styles, skills and techniques as a good basis for them to continue to develop throughout secondary school and later on in life.

Art is taught three times each year, one afternoon a week in six week blocks, every other half term. Links to other curriculum areas are made where relevant. A typical sequence of work will involve: researching an artist, their style and materials, teacher modelling, use of sketch books to explore and develop techniques with a range of materials, review and evaluate their own work, plan and produce their own creations, applying their new skills. Children’s work is often displayed within the classroom, around the school, on the school website and we have an Amazing Artists display board in school which is used to showcase artistic talent. Children are asked to produce six pieces of artwork at home and once completed, to hand it in. One artist is chosen each fortnight/month to be displayed. All children create special occasion pieces for their families, such as Christmas decorations, Christmas and Mother’s Day cards.
