Summer Two
We will learn about Matthew Henson, focusing on his pivotal role in reaching the North Pole, how he overcame immense difficulties, and how his achievements are remembered.
We will also explore the incredible story of Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon, examining the significant event of the moon landing and how this monumental achievement is commemorated. Students will create timelines of events for both expeditions (North Pole and space) and engage in a debate, comparing the two journeys and deciding which expedition they would like to go on and why. This unit encourages critical thinking and an appreciation for human endeavor.
In DT, our students will become pop-up card design experts! We will begin by looking at a range of pop-up cards and books, exploring different styles and mechanisms. Then, we will explore and pull apart various pop-up creations to understand the mechanics behind how they work. Children will test a range of different pop-up techniques such as levers, curves, V-folds, and box pop-ups, learning how each is made. They will then plan their own pop-up card designs against specific criteria, selecting the technique they want to use and designing the content within the card. Finally, the children will make their pop-up cards following their designs and chosen mechanisms. The unit will conclude with an evaluation of their product and mechanism, reflecting on what worked well and what they would improve or change next time.
