Welcome to the new school year in Eagles!
With and exciting history topic and 2 different science topics, this promises to be an exciting term.
History Corner: Anglo-Saxons and Vikings
This term, we’ll been learning about the fascinating history of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings!
- Where did they come from? The Anglo-Saxons were from Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, while the Vikings hailed from Scandinavia (modern-day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark).
- Why did they invade? Both groups were in search of better farmland, wealth, and new opportunities.
- Anglo-Saxon Timeline: After the Romans left Britain, the Anglo-Saxons began settling around 410 AD, eventually shaping the culture and landscape of early medieval England.
- Place Names & Village Life: Many of today’s towns and villages, like ‘-ton’ (farm) and ‘-ham’ (village), come from Anglo-Saxon words. Life in Anglo-Saxon villages revolved around farming and community.
- Sutton Hoo: One of the most famous Anglo-Saxon discoveries is the Sutton Hoo burial site, filled with treasures and a grand ship.
- The Vikings: These seafaring warriors started raiding Britain in the late 8th century, looking for riches and land.
- Important Figures: We’ll explore key figures like Alfred the Great, who defended England from Viking attacks, and Athelstan, the first King of a united England. We will also look at law and justice in their time and how Edward the Confessor’s death led to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
Science corner:
Properties of materials
We will learn how to compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal) and magnetism. We will discover how some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and we will use our knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide which mixtures might be separated.
Animals including humans
We will look at how animals change throughout their lifecycle starting right from when a baby is growing inside it's mother, childhood, puberty and old age
