Shining Start

What is Shining Start?

Shining Start Class is a welcoming and stimulating environment where every child is celebrated. Our child-centred approach ensures that teaching is adapted to meet individual needs, allowing children to make exceptional progress. Our ambitious curriculum provides rich and engaging experiences, while our carefully designed classroom offers a supportive space for learning and exploration. Through individualised planning, we help children achieve small steps towards their goals, fostering confidence and independence.

Who's Who?

Our Team is made up of Mrs McNeil (Specialist Teaching and Learning Assistant), Mis Benton (Teaching Assistant), Mrs Hatton (Care Assistant), Mr Judge (EYFS Coordinator and Shining Start Lead) and Mrs Bourne (SENDCo).

Reading

Each child has a home a reading diary and two books. One is matched to your child's reading ability and one is for sharing. Please read the book with your child at least three times per week (they will then earn a loop on their reading chain. Who will make the longest chain?) and practice the phonemes and tricky words inside their reading diaries - more information about this is in their reading diary.

Please also remember that your username and password for Bug Club will be in your child's reading diary and logging into this gives your child a range of reading and phonics activities tailored to their needs.

Forest Schools

Forest school will take place on a Monday afternoon with Miss Stevenson. During forest school the children create wild art, clay sculptures as well as learning about their local environment and the wider world in which we live in. We do provide wellies for every child, however, if your child would like to wear their own, then please pop them in a bag with their name on.

Homework

Creative homework booklets will be given out to each child. They consist of lots of fun activities for you to do with your child as well as reading, maths and tricky word practice. Homework books are marked each week and the more you complete the more points you earn, which then turn into rewards!

You can send in photos of your homework to mcneilk@ironvillecodnorpark.derbyshire.sch.uk

PE

PE will be on a Tuesday and a Friday so please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days and that everything is clearly labelled.

Water Bottles

Please can your child brings in a water bottle containing water and please make sure it is clearly labelled.
